Project

01

Fire Safety Training.

At Durham Tees Valley Airport.

This project was one of the most exciting, and also one of the more difficult videos to make.

The footage was collected over 8 days of a training course at the airport, the course included petrol and methanol fires and how to put them out etc.- methanol burns with an invisible flame so to capture this with cameras was a nice little challenge.

We used a combination of a jib, a drone and a handheld gimbal to get the smooth B roll footage. There was also a lot of movement around the site, so a simple run and gun shoulder rig was used to collect the more fast paced stuff. There's also a small usage of GoPro footage, to really get in amongst the action.

The audio for the interviews was a little difficult as the rooms available to us had quite bad acoustics, but it was easily overcome with some clever mic placement and post processing courtesy of iZotope plugins.

Of course the most difficult part of the process was gathering drone footage at an active airport. After initially getting permission to fly, we had to go up in the air traffic control tower for a briefing and explain our flights, and have a member of staff radio back to ATC the whole flight. All members of airport staff we encountered were very helpful which made everything easier.

This project is a cross between corporate and documentary. We had to document the training accurately, entertainingly, and engagingly, however it was important to keep the companies involved and get their message across. Watch the full video below:
